Voters of District 119:
With the General Election nearly upon us, it’s important to know what your current elected official, Representative Pat George, has done for Kansas families. Providers of services to disabled children through the Technology Assist Waiver and Home and Community Based Services (a division of SRS) have struggled to bring attention to a very small program that has a significant impact for Kansas families facing the challenges that come with caring for severely disabled children in family settings. For the last two legislative sessions, Representative Pat George has taken the time to understand and support this program for medically fragile children. His experience helps him recognize that keeping consumers and workers at home (in their own communities) not only saves costs, but keeps children, their families and caregivers at home.
As a member of the SRS Budget Committee, Representative Pat George worked with other legislators to formulate a budget neutral fee schedule where reimbursement was increased to direct caregivers. Ultimately, the results of these efforts will improve the amount and quality of care delivered. In every session, there are heated, well debated, large scale issues that can consume legislators. It was refreshing to experience Representative George’s passion for the care of medically fragile children, the economic viability of their families and communities, while seeking a fiscally responsible solution. While other issues might provide much more press or media attention, his involvement on this issue was out of concern for the children and families in both the 119th district and across the entire state.
